چکیده
Counterfactual skepticism says that most ordinary counterfactuals are false. While few endorse counterfactual skepticism, the precise costs of view disputed and not generally well-understood. I have two aims in this paper. My first primary aim is to establish, on grounds acceptable all parties, benign. argue it leads significant about future: if true, then we can only very limited knowledge future. give three arguments conclusion, taking as premises principles connecting indicative conditionals disjunctions; linking conditionals. second examine consequences for non-skeptical theories. indicate many but also know them. How be reconciled with real tension between chance? consider solutions, one purely epistemic contextualist. Together they suggest something like contextualism required fully resolve skeptical threat.

متن کاملSkepticism, Sensitivity, and Closure, or Why the Closure Principle is Irrelevant to External World Skepticism
Is there a plausible argument for external world skepticism? Robert Nozick’s well–known discussion focuses upon arguments which utilize the Sensitivity Requirement and the Closure Principle. Nozick claims, correctly, that no such argument succeeds. But he gets almost all the details wrong. The Sensitivity Requirement and the Closure Principle are compatible; the Sensitivity Requirement is incor...

It may be possible to scientifically test philosophical skepticism; at least this is what I shall maintain. The argument develops the naturalistic insight that there may be no particular reason to suppose that nature has selected Homo sapiens’ epistemic capacities such that we are ideally suited to forming a true theory of everything, or indeed, a true theory of much of anything. Just as chimpa...
متن کاملMysterianism and Skepticism
The article discusses the proposals for replying to the skeptical challenge developed by the socalled Neo-mysterians, and more particularly by the most eloquent of them, Colin McGinn. McGinn’s version of mysterianism, which he labels “Transcendental Naturalism,” is a very candid and rigorous form of scientific naturalism since (contrary to the standard naturalistic views) it is prepared to conc...
متن کاملSkepticism and floating conclusions
The purpose of this paper is to question some commonly accepted patterns of reasoning involving nonmonotonic logics that generate multiple extensions. In particular, I argue that the phenomenon of floating conclusions indicates a problem with the view that the skeptical consequences of such theories should be identified with the statements that are supported by each of their various extensions....
